The red pointer indicates the away end
Name: West Ham United
Nickname: The Hammers, The Iron
Founded: 1895
Manager: Alan Curbishley
Chairman: Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson
Ground: Boleyn Ground (commonly known as Upton Park)
Travel:
By car: Traveling from Stoke-on-Trent, supporters can either use the M1 or the M6. If using the M6, at Junction 11a take the right hand lane and continue forward onto the M6 Toll (signposted The South). From there continue forward onto the M42, at Junction 7a follow the M6 (signposted London N and E). Continue onto the M1.
Leave the M1 at Junction 6a and join the M25.
Leave the M25 at Junction 27 and join the M11 Southbound.
The end of the motorway joins the A406 from the left, creating a 4 lane road for a short distance. Supporters should be in the outside two lanes passing the junctions for Redbridge, and Ilford.
Leave the A406 at the Barking junction. At the roundabout, at the bottom of the slip road, turn right, taking the 3rd exit towards East Ham (Barking Road).
Proceed West along Barking Road through several sets of traffic lights until passing the lights at East Ham Town Hall (big red Victorian building on the left just before the lights). Three quarters of a mile further, the ground is on the right (behind a parade of shops, including the Hammers Shop). At the next lights (Boleyn Arms Pub on right hand corner), turn right into Green Street.
Parking: On Saturday matchdays, parking is very restricted with little or no off-road parking. The best areas to look for spaces are roads left of Barking Road, once past the lights at East Ham Town Hall.
By rail: The nearest tube station is Upton Park which is on the District line, plus the Hammersmith and City lines. The ground is a short walk from the station.
Full details on using the London Underground system are available on-line.
Details on rail times are available from National Rail.
The fan's guide:
Gordon Thrower is editor of West Ham fan site Knees Up Mother Brown and has supported The Hammers for over 40 years.
What pubs would you recommend for away fans? "The ones nearest the ground are probably best avoided. I believe the Miller’s Well on Barking Road (about 15 mins away by foot) is away-friendly and the Earl Of Wakefield in Katharine Road (10 minutes) is usually okay if there are only a few of you and you’re sensible.
"The Dome is only a few tube stops away if you want to see where all your taxes have gone and might be a good place to stop for lunch but I’m not sure of their attitude to football supporters."
What areas would you recommend for parking? "None! The only parking near the ground is on-street and you stand a fair chance of returning to find a pile of broken glass and your stereo missing.
"If you do park locally get there early as space is limited.
"You may get lucky at the pay and display at Newham General Hospital.
"Otherwise many people park safely elsewhere and travel in by tube or train. Upminster is about 30 minutes away, has a car park and is handy for the M25."
Do you have any travel tips for our supporters? "Check Transport for London’s website (tfl.gov.uk) for tube and rail news. They have a habit of scheduling engineering works on matchdays.
"Allow yourself a good hour to get on the tube after the match – the queue to board trains at Upton Park Station are horrendous and many people use East Ham or Plaistow which, although a walk away, are less crowded."
Where would you recommend supporters looking for accommodation headed for? "Accommodation prices are shocking in London – best bet would be the Travel Lodge-style places where you know what you’re going to get or, failing that, find something on the outskirts of town and commute in."
What local attractions should our supporters pay a visit to? "The Bobby Moore World Cup Statue on the corner of Green Street & Barking Road apart, there isn’t much in the immediate area. Of course London as a whole has the lot but you’d need a few days to even scratch the surface!"
