MATTHEW Etherington became the Potters' first signing of 2009 when Tony Pulis paid West Ham United a reported £3 million for the winger.
The signing was met with near universal approval and relief from supporters who were desperate for a natural left-sided winger to join the team.
On signing for the Potters Etherington, a former England under-21 international, claimed the club could stay in the Premier League despite their lowly position.
The Cornwall-born midfielder seems to have been around forever but is just 27. He began his career at Peterborough United where he made his debut aged 15 years and 262 days old, in a 2-1 win at Brentford.
After a string of dazzling displays, despite his tender years, Etherington earned a trial at Manchester United in July 1999. A few months later and he did earn a permanent deal, but not at Old Trafford, Etherington signed for Tottenham Hotspur for £500,000. He arrived at White Hart Lane with fellow Peterborough United youngster, Simon Davies.
He initially failed to cement a regular first-team place and was loaned out to Bradford City for some more first team experience.
After three years at Tottenham, Etherington left for West Ham United where he made a big impact and one 'Hammer of the Year' after his first season.
