Shawcross makes England squad![]() Feb27
by Martin Spinks RYAN Shawcross has been sensationally selected for the full England squad for the first time - on the day of his horror incident with Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey. Shawcross was this evening named in the party to face Egypt in a friendly at Wembley on Wednesday - less than two hours after his tackle left Ramsey with a suspected double leg fracture. It now remains to be seen whether the 22 year-old central defender is in the right state of mind to take up his appointment. Shawcross, who has previously appeared for the England under-21s, wins his first call-up after injuries to new skipper Rio Ferdinand and Bolton's Gary Cahill. He is likely to start on the bench at Wembley, if he joins up with the squad, as John Terry, Matthew Upson and Joleon Lescott would appear to be ahead of him in the queue. His call-up completed a remarkably bitter-sweet day for Shawcross after manager Tony Pulis admitted he deserved red for his challenge on Ramsey. But Pulis diligently defended his player's reputation and insisted there would have been no intent to injury Ramsey.

Shawcross
I hope Capello does the righs thing and withdraws Shawcross's selection to the England team citing his reasons for this that he does not want thugs representing England.
As for Pulis, just like Allerdyce - he sends his players out to kick & hurt Arsenal - he's sees this as a legitimate tactic - so he should shut up about intent.
Take responsibility
Wait a minute? Who was in control of Shawcross' leg? Do you want to live your life in a society where people excuse their own reckless behavior by saying they don't mean to hurt anyone? Is that some solace to those victimized by their recklessness?
What moral ****. Why is it ok for Shawcross to play for the FA, but not in an FA-sanctioned match? He should be dropped.
And charged with criminal recklessness in pursuit of his professions.
I see the Arsenal fans are
I see the Arsenal fans are letting their emotions rule their heads. It wasnt even a foul, it was unfortunate and accidental. You cant hang Shawcross just because teams play hard against you. He was distraught. The ref only showed the red card after seeing the injury. Im not a Stoke fan either.
Get real
Ryan Shawcross is a genuine professional and a great, honest lad. Don't dare make any judgement on a lightning instant challenge that happened to end in an awful, freak outcome. He would be the last player to wish this on anyone.
Shawcross isn't a thug. It
Shawcross isn't a thug. It was an unfortunate accident that could easily have ended with Shawcross being injured. And it's ok to have adulteres and real thugs (Gerard) who beat people up to play for England? gimme a break.
And as for sending player out to hurt Arsenal, presenters of the programe said that ALL teams do this, Wenger himself said that all teams do this, why are you singling out Stoke and Blackburn?
I admit that it was a
I admit that it was a terrible accident, but that's what it was. By the look of things it could have easily been Shawcross with the broken leg. Commentators and presenters said it was a football related injury which could happen at any time in any game to any player. It was an unfortunate incident that had a terrible result. How did Shawcross know that he was going to be selected for England? How can you say that he was criminally reckless? It was a mis-timed tackle that will haunt the lad for a LONG time, he was just doing his job and even the ref said the only reason he got a red card was because of the injury NOT the tackle.
Shawcross
Two people go for a ball they both badly want. One gets there first, the other is a little late. The "winner" of that particular fight gets to be the loser, because the late challenge hurts him badly. The late challenger, late by a split second, has no choice in the tackle which he'd made, but is still the bad guy because he was late.
It used to be in football that you'd be punished if your intention was to hurt an opponent. Now because of a split second you get to be the bad guy, even if you never intended to hurt the opponent.
Such are the fine lines of modern day footbvall. That it was made in front of millions condems him even further.
I can understand Wenger's emotions, but if he wants justice for his players, he should afford it to his opponents as well.
Midfield
I know as a Hammer i'm biased but how Scott Parker is not in the squad just completely baffles me
as a holding type player, surely it speaks volumes that the 2 holding players picked, Carrick and Barry, play for City and United
Both of whom want Parker
Re: Shawcross' Tackle
I've just seen the 'Shawcross tackle' on MotD and I didn't feel it was malicious, just mistimed - after hearing Wenger's scathing remarks I felt I had to comment. I hope the FA don't let Wenger bad-mouthe one of our country's fine upcoming defenders in the national media and I hope Wales' talent Ramsey has a full recovery. Boing! Boing!
Shawcross
I'm getting tired of poor excuses for career ending tackles. Is n't about time someone did something about it. Shawcross should be banned until ramsay recovers (**** his call up). Stoke should be docked points so we can start doing something about these limited, primitive, technically cak managers like Pullis and Allardyce who think it's ok to send their teams to go and get "stuck in" with no regard for playing the game. Stoke I genuinely hope you go down and genuinely hope that Shawcross has no chance of playoff for england
Watching the pundits on
Watching the pundits on Match of the Day comment on Shawcross' challenge I realise how irrational logic is ever present in the game and why football will never move forward when it is grossly embedded in the psyche of football to dominate with aggression and not with talent.
Football is a fast game. So, how stupid do you have to be to play with aggression, with force with speed where contact is involved? Where is your respect and consideration for players in such a game?
This is the 3rd "unfortunate" incident in 5 years for arsenal players , eduardo diaby and now ramsey , its about time stoke were relegated ,consigned to a lower grade of football where they truly belong, and pulis is a ungracious , pompous idiot who's knowledge of how to play the beautiful game could be engraved onto a pin head
Shawcross should get dropped
Shawcross should get dropped from the endland team and I personaly think teams who can't out play Arsenal and have to get physical should face heavy fines if they seriously hurt players. 3 players in 5 years is just to much!
the shawcross tackle i don't beleave he ment to break his leg but i do beleave he perposly went in hard. i also beleave theres a split 2nd where you can see shawcross is not going to win the ball and i also beleave he knows it.
Shawcross hits the ball on a few inches to far. his run also gets slowed down by tomas v. at this point i beleave shawcross knows he wont win the ball and keep it in a controlled manour, yet some how he can justify going in with so much force it breaks one of footballs best potential stars legs. he could of just pust his toe at it with very little point, but know he pulls his leg right back! and unleashs a very heavy tackle. Shawcross should be banned from football without pay untill ramsey recovers!
Unfortunate
As a Welshman I am devastated I won't be able to watch Ramsey on Wednesday night and can understand the emotive messages from Arsenal fans. Aaron is the Welsh speaker with the highest profile since John Hartson and we have been expecting great things from him. As much as I sympathise with the Arsenal fans it shows a total lack of understanding of the game to hurl such criticism on Ryan Shawcross and Tony Pulis. Football is and always will be a contact sport and the Gunners do not have a monopoly on the beautiful game - watching Sol Campbell play is enough proof of that! The true beauty of the game is the variety of tactics and approaches applied by various teams. I was at the Wolves v Chelsea game last week and enjoyed Chelsea's route one second goal and the passion which saw them hold on against the onslaught by Wolves. I also love the passion of being at the Britannia. The challenge today was a sad accident which will lead to sympathy from all football fans and all football fans should see it as the accident it was. Dymuniadau gorau (Best wishes) to Aaron but also to Ryan Shawcross.
shawcross
how can anyone say shawcross went to hurt ramsay with intent when he did not go in with his studs
no one ever got on roy keanes back this much did they when he effectively ended alfie haarlands career even when he admitted he did the tackle on purpose
and here yet some people come on here bullying a 21 year old player who is still learning the game and made a very clumsy tackle
ryan has never been sent off before and as a season ticket holder at stoke i can safely say he has never ever gone in to injure anyone. anyone who saw the tackle on match of the day must see he never intended to cause harm ramsay was just too quick for ryan
ps shawcross deserves his england chance and people should get behind and support him through his rather than be on his case about it too much
yes red card but no way intentional so why not just back off and leave the kid alone
Shawcross-No angel
I'm not buying into the ''Shawcross is a nice guy'' bollocks,he's got previous.
He smashed Francis Jeffers ankle a few season back with a nasty wreckess tackle.
and at old trafford last season,he tried to 'do' ronaldo
Shawcross
Thugs in the England team? What about the asshole Terry?
how many unintended leg
how many unintended leg breaks by honest professionals do we need for someone to act? It's obvious he didn't intend to do it. But why have we seen it too many times?? Because rubbish players have been allowed to make careless tackles as parr of their clueless managers plans by witless refs
Stoke fans can rationalize
Stoke fans can rationalize this any way they want. They fact is that he went in terribly, he has done this before, and he should be severely punished.
Shawcross....
Couple of points here - isn't this the second 'accident' involving Shawcross and an opponent's broken leg? Also while it was good to see a large number of Stoke fans applauding Ramsey as he was taken off...that lasted for what...five minutes... as they then chanted 'there's only one Ryan Shawcross', nice stuff Stoke fans. But then you are the same club that includes a group of supporters who necessitated the use of police horses to deal with crowd trouble for the first time at the Emirates last season as bottles flew from your 'supporters' in a bizarre scene that took us back to the late sixties and early seventies...but then perhaps that's what you want football to return to - falling gates, crunching mindless tackles, and half-empty grounds left to the morons. But then you're motto is Proud to be Loud.
What about Arsenal Vs Bolton
Lot's of Arsenal fans coming on here condeming Shawcross for what was a genuine attempt to win the ball- he was just late and unfortunately caught the standing leg of Ramsey- a horrific accident but no malice intended. However have all Arsenal fans forgotten about the Bolton game recently when one of their players (Eboue I think but may be wrong) did a horrendous tackle on a Bolton player which could very easily have broken the guys leg. Fortunately on that occasion it didn't but it was a far worse tackle than Shawcross' and looked like there was intent to hurt! Reading some of the comments on here it sounds like some Arsenal fans want to ban tackling for the game in case players are late and injure other players! Maybe if no-one is allowed to tackle them they might win something!
P.S. Arsenal are hardly a team of saints themselves!
ACCIDENT
Get real Gunners, it was a complete accident, not even a foul. No studs, one foot at ball height!!
This is Football
This happens in football, get over it.......
The only way it could be stopped is if they ban the "tackle" all together. Sure wenger would love that!
Arsenal have had a number of filthy players down the years Sol Campbell and Patrick Vieira to name a few.
Ryan Shawcross has been an excellent player for Stoke in the last 2-3 years and has proven it time and time again. Hence people saying he's destined for England. Now he gets called up, what more proof do you need that it was just a 50/50 and Ramsey got hurt. A late tackle at most to which watching in slow motion on MOTD confirmed.
Stoke may not have the skillful players Arsenal do but players with heart and commitment they have in abundance. Displayed again by the fact that Glen Whelan was the one that was with Ramsey putting in the recovery position, making sure he didn't swallow his tongue. What were the Arsenal players more concerned with? Getting Ryan sent off!
All the talk about Arsenal getting bullied all the time is getting old. Just like all the talk about Arsenal being diving cheats that can't take it when teams don't roll over for them.
The 3 game ban will be enough and Ryan will have a lot to think about over the next week. Just hope the experience makes him come back stronger and he does his country proud.
Smell the coffee
There's some daft remarks on here re: stoke thugs, Shawcross not to play for england, points deduction, etc
The truth is the tackle was a 50/50.. both players attempted to win and anyone who has played football will be familiar with the situation where you feel you can win the ball and so does the opponent. The speed of the game means that both players try even though the outcome is uncertain. I think we all need to accept that these situations will always occurs and unfortunately from time to time there will be injuries. Of course on this occasion the injury was more severe but not a consequence of a terrible player error. Instead, it was a risk of the game. Some people need to smell the coffee and realise this.
I don`t think it`s very fair
I don`t think it`s very fair that people should put Shawcross down like they are. What if it was the other way round and it was Shawcross who got the terrible injury??? Would you be saying the same thing about Aaron Ramsey? NO you wouldnt, you would just say it was a terrible accident well NEWSFLASH thats exactly what it was, just a terrible accident and it can happen to anybody in that profession, Ryan Shawcross had a clean history record and it was very clear that Ryan was devastated by what happened and don`t you think he will punish himself with guilt for what happened? and i speak for many people when i say this but Ryan deserves his place on the england team and i hope he gets the opportunity to show us all what hes made of. Good luck Ryan Shawcross and keep your chin up and your head held high
SHAWCROSS
do people forget that Ryan shawcross is a defender and was only doing his duty, which he does week by week,i hope Ramsy makes a speedy recovery but stop moaning AFC its a man's game not boys so do your self a favour Arsene and buy some in the summer.
English Football.
Arsenal supporters, before you bury a great footballer(yes great)consider this.
Three incidents in five years, perhaps its YOUR style of play that might be at fault - keep the ball at your feet and you WILL be tackled, not just at Stoke but any club in the UK.
EVERY club in English football has player/s who tackle - some late, albeit marginally on this occasion. THIS INCLUDES ARSENAL! Because your manager chooses to play what you consider to be 'beautiful' football doesn't make you exempt from making late tackles or indeed committing any other offence.
Blessedliam - Where where your players when Ramsey was on the ground? Showing their concern by getting in the Refs/Shawcross's face and getting that red card! Also, Stoke supporters applauding Ramsey off the pitch for five minutes? WRONG. It was until he was in the Ambulance which was on its way to the hospital in less than 5 minutes from being stretchered off.
If you want to watch football without tackles and 15 passes before the ball passes the half way line then watch Italian football because you're not going to get it here.
It was an upsetting incident for all concerned but to condemn a player and club shows naivete - football is a contact sport and it is why the Premiership is the best league in the world. Sadly, accidents happen and always will.
I Hope that Aaron's recovery is quick and complete and Ryan's successful career at Stoke and England continues and look forward to seeing them shake hands as true sportsmen when England play Wales in the future.
Shawcross tackle
Shawcross was the player in possession;admittedly he pushed the ball a bit too far in front of him and the tackle ended up being a 50-50 with Ramsey. It was clear on MOTD that both players were trying to play the ball and Shawcross went into the tackle with full commitment;I would question Ramsey's desire and technique when going in for the tackle, also overstretching and leading with his outstretched foot, the non-tackling foot not anchored to the ground in the correct position. Consequently we have all the ingredients for this type of accident and the player who comes off worst is the one who did not look after himself technique-wise when going in for the tackle. This is the third time in five years Arsenal players have suffered bad injuries; its about time they started to learn how to tackle in training rather than constantly practising their fre-flowing Football!
Shawcross has been harshly treated; the referee did not initially see much wrong in the tackle, only sending him off after seeing the reaction of other players and the state of Ramsey's leg. Lots of people have said that Shawcross deserved to be sent off, should be banned for longer, should not be allowed to play for England and Stoke should be docked points or even relegated! These people want contact taken out of the game which will suit the likes of Arsenal. This defies the traditions of the game and nullifies the physical side of the game. It will become like Netball! Wenger is keen for Football to move in this direction as he and the Arsenal fans don't like it when teams like Stoke can beat them with a physical approach. Accidents happen in a physical game, if Arsenal fans can't stomach it, go and watch Netball!
im sick
im sick of hearing all this bull off arsenal fans,I will admit i hate arsenal with a passion but i aint blind either i saw the tackle it wasnt a malice tackle. i have noticed we are having a problem with discipline and shawcross has been part of this but only for smaller thing like holding and throwing players to the ground, the rest have been cause are players are too old and too slow.
Yes we arnt as technically gifted as arsenal but we also dont have a fraction of the money being pumped in to our team we got to the prem on merit more than money.
The game of football in England has always had an element of a physical nature in it, its borne out of our passion for the game and same passion is in our players to because they to are football fans at heart if there wasnt any passion it would be boring to us in England. this same passion is being shown in some of ur responses, football ust to be a mans game and things like this happened alot more and the players injury's never stopped their career. i do also know that stoke do need to evolve their footballing ways to be able to compete in the prem, but saying stupid things like stoke should be kicked out of the prem for this incident is just stupid, following that line of reasoning then man u shouldnt be there due to the keane incident and he actually meant to do it. and lets follow it back shall we if u really wanted that would mean arsenal wouldnt be a team cause in the 70's an arsenal player ran the length of the pitch and deliberately broke a stoke players leg ( cant remember which 2 players were involved). AND YES THAT DID HAPPEN!
And as for the England call up that came 2 hours after the game after Cappelo had seen the incident and deemed it not full of malice!
sorry for my little rant but i thought it was needed, i am truly sorry for Aaron he is such a good player shame he is welsh lol. Our thoughts as a team and a community go out to him.
i hope ramsey recovers
i hope ramsey recovers quickly - but it says a lot about arsenal, stoke were the only ones comforting him
arsenal are worse!
Shawcross made a bad tackle but with no intent of hurting ramsey unlike when cesc fabregas needlessly slide tackled danny pugh from behind in stokes own box, when aresenal were winning!? Sol campbell was much more aggressive than the stoke players and it was just bad luck that ramsey got hurt he was just to quick for ryan. Im not even going to go into the consistent cheating of the arsenal players taking a throw in 30 yards further forward than it should of been and looking to the ref everytime they were tackled exspecting a free kick or thomas vermarlons dirty challenges on fuller. stoke could moan just as much about bad fouls as arsenal could but we just take it like men and get on with the game instaed of rolling around on the floor, getting the free kick then standing back up again with a miraculous recovery!! It is a shame ramsey was fouled but dont try and make it look like were the cheating dirty players!
There's only one Ryan Shawcross
this is for BlessedLiam really think you're getting the wrong idea here, stoke fans were chanting for Shawcross as they we're showing support for their player as he was clearly devastated by what he had done, and as far as half empty grounds full of morons and failing gates we'll all see you at the Emirates next year sweetheart.
i don't even think it was a
i don't even think it was a bad tackle - 100's of similar tackles are made every week, even during this game against stoke players - i don't think the ref thought it carried malice, but he had to send him off - ramsay's leg was already twisted
wenger lives in a rose garden
Unfortunate...
I feel sorry for Ramsay, it was a freak accident. Everyone with the exception of Arsenal fans and Wenger realise this. If the tackle would have been studs first or two footed then i would be on here agreeing with the Arsenal fans, even as a Stoke supporter, but it's clear that it was just an unfortunate incident.
Anyway, no one deserves to get injured like that. Well, no one except maybe Sol Campbell. For lack of a better description, he really is a horrible human being.
Now come on,if you seriously
Now come on,if you seriously think that young Ryan really tried to injure Ramsey with his challenge then you must of borrowed Monsiuer Wengers specs.
As somebody that has played football since junior school,I have been involved in 3 challenges that have resulted in opposition players receiving badly broken legs, the last one was enough to make me hang up my goalkeeping gloves as the 18 yr old lad suffered such a severe break that he now walks with the aid of a stick. At no point during any of the challenges was there any intent to cause injury or harm,it is just part and parcel of the game, and in most incidents it is all down to a split second reaction.
If you think that it was a malicious challenge and that Shawcross should be banned then may I suggest that you take a look at the ozzie 'A' LEAGUE where a lot of the challenges that result in serious injury really do hark back to the days of Chopper Harris.
Wishing you a speedy recovery Mr Ramsey.
Open your eyes without the specs and see it for what it was,,,an 'ACCIDENT'
scum bag
Is This the same Shawcross who broke Francis Jeffers leg in 2007, and also put Emmanuel Adebayor out of two month with an off the ball clash las t year, once maybe a mistake, twice a dirty player and a Third a TOTAL SCUM BAG!!!
Shawcross - RG
Dear RG
You're not a Vale fan by any chance are you ? Anybody with half a brain in his head could see that there was no malice whatsoever in Ryan's challenge on Ramsey.
The injury was terrible accident , it's as simple as that.
Ramsey Ref Shawcross
After the so called foul? the ref was not sure what to call, until he was surrounded by Arsenal players sreaming for a red card.Decision made/Come on ref, Act like a ref,Well done Stoke players for the concern that you
shewed while the Arsenal players were sreaming to the ref, Speedy recovery
to Ramsey, Good luck mate.
all this bull about big ryan
I sit here and read all these comments about ryans tackle on ramsey of who I wish a speedy recovery--but the simple facts are it was a 50 50 challenge ryan had already commited to the challenge and at the last milli second ramsey moved the ball leading to the unfortunate injury to ramsey --it is impossible for ANY player to stop at that point --it was not malicious or dangerous just a accident --i was 20 feet away and level with it--all this bull about stoke being relegated and docked points is pathetic-- you arsenal fans should realise that you play your football in britain and maybe wenger should pay a bit of time and put the strengh back into his team like the players he had like viera and others instead of winging all the time ----oh and liamblessed the horse incident arose because your lads came at stoke lads and then realised they had made a big mistake--- dont winge about it when you start it.
you should be banned from
you should be banned from writing until you can SPELL
reply to RG 27/02/2010-2305
what a load of blinker wearing band wagon jumping thug talking trash...
Ryan Shawcross was keen and determined but unfortunately late with his challenge, And he deserves His place in the England squad for sure.
Im sure everyone concerned with ryan at stoke and the general public can see this lad has not got any bad intent towards anyone.
ryan shawcross
Yet again we have to listen to the ramblings of the french (i never saw it till it suits) idiot and his following morons. If any of them knew anything about the game of football they will know it is a physical game where accidents happen, football is a game of opinions now as even they can see the weight of opinion is falling on the side of Ryan ,so let the FA be big enough to rescind ryans card(yellow at worst)and charge wenger with ungentlemanly conduct.Get well soon Aaron Ramsey and good luck for wedensday ryan be loud be proud we are behind you
