City boss backs Matty for international honoursFeb08
by Martin Spinks TONY Pulis reckons Stoke are gradually getting trendier in the wider world – and that can only boost future international prospects. But he admits Matthew Etherington’s name would be bandied around far more in national circles if he was playing for a more established Premier League club. “If Matty was at a different club, other people would be talking him up,” he said. “But I think the fact we’ve signed a goalkeeper in Asmir Begovic, who was being chased by Chelsea and Spurs, shows we are hopefully getting there. “England boss Fabio Capello is his own man, but I know his assistant [Franco Baldini] and [England under-21s coach] Stuart Pearce have both been here to look at Matty and Ryan [Shawcross]. “There was never any doubt about Matty’s ability and now people see what a great threat he is. He’s a great kid with a great attitude. “He’s got something to play for and if they are talking about England, that’s brilliant. He’s got 15 games to do it and you never know. If they pick up a couple of injuries on the left-hand side...” Etherington rounded off the scoring with a brilliant second-half goal to add to first-half strikes by Danny Higginbotham and Mama Sidibe. Pulis said: “It was a great performance and I was absolutely delighted with the players’ effort and commitment. “Blackburn have had some good results of late and it was important we made our possession pay. I thought the two lads in central midfield [Delap and Whitehead] were brilliant and gave us the energy. “There’s four tough games coming up and so I freshened it up – and their legs were outstanding. “We also worked the set plays well, with the quality coming into the box from Matty and Liam [Lawrence] just outstanding. “Mama’s goal will be a confidence booster for him. He was in the right position at the back post and that’s where we want him more often. “We want to finish the second half of the season well and we’ve had a good start to it. But we are still greenhorns when it comes to the Premier League and so mustn’t get carried away.” “Our Prozone stats are better than last year and it shows. We are monitoring what we do, and getting fitter and more athletic players in.”

Where've all the Pulis-bashers on this site gone?
See you again on Wednesday when we've only got a point at Wigan
I would rather it be three
I would rather it be three points against a team that will be there for the taking, just like Sunderland were. Great teams win a way from home as well as winning at home in front of there fans, but still I suppose one point will be good for some people to live with.
Pulis bashers!
Personally not a Pulis basher just a TP sceptic! One swallow doesnt make a summer. Great result against Blackburn and better selection and approach all round. I can see the merit in continuing to pick Mama (even though he is below Premiership standard) as that is the way TP wants to play bearing in mind we missed the opportunity to find a new target man in the window (although I accept there weren't many replacements about - Kenwynne Jones Ho! ho!). Some of our best players are still on the bench and that's why people will be TP sceptics but at least the light has dawned about Diao (although reduced odds on him not being on the team sheet tonight. The reason the TP criticism has gone quiet is presumably a feeling he is beginning to get it right and let us all hope it works. Would still like to see Ric and Tunc play together. Probably won't happen and certainly not tonight! Suspect it will be another smash and grab attempt. Ashamed to say it but I wouldnt mind accepting a point tonight - we saw what Wigan are capable of albeit by a flukey (brilliant) strike.
It's not about bashing TP,
It's not about bashing TP, it's about wanting the best for the team. If Stoke win all the fans are happy, including those who want to the team to play more positively against the bigger clubs and away from home.
Although for the BB game, TP did start with Lawrence and without Diao, two changes that alot of fans were urging for. Same applies to Wilko at right back.
Sidibe scoring only saved his bacon for another week or two. When i see him actually hit a decent shot and score then i might change my opinion. Tap ins and scuffed shots don't convince me.
Prediction for tonight: I'm going for a 0-2 win with Huth and Tuncay scoring.
Might see Fuller confined to the bench for his Sunday night antics.
I'm not a Pulis basher
I'm not a Pulis basher either. I just want the team to do well. when I see them playing crap, I will moan about it. When I see them playing more positively, I will praise them.
