Djibril Cisse
I appreciate the reputation this player has but should we purchase a player on reputation alone, Cisse has obviously become surplus to requirements at Sunderland with Bruce focusing his attentions on Darren Bent and Zigic and subsequently sending him back to Marseille, if he had performed to the standard required by a club similar to ourselves then surely Sunderland would have made it a permanent deal. My opinion is that highlights of the games that I have seen Cisse play and the match at the Britannia is that he is an average Premiership player and certainly does not stand out, his appetite for the game is becoming smaller and along with a lot of big names just past their twilight years he is underperforming and will continue to do so.
I personally think Dave Nugent would be a good signing for Stoke, I think he would slot into the forward line in the absence of Beattie and Fuller or alternativeley sit behind them in an attacking midfield role. He is relativeley young only 24, his best years are ahead of him and he has a massive point to prove at this level, he is a similar personality to James Beattie and would fit in and become idolised the way that Beattie has. He was in the fringe of the England squad, his distribution, awareness and finishing abilities and hunger for the game are unquestionable and with Pompey having sold themselves to another rich Arab I think Nugent may become available at a price we should consider for a cracking addition to the squad. That will leave 5 great players in Fuller, Beattie, Kitson and Nugent with Mama knocking on the door, all capable of scoring goals and changing the game, do we need any more?

Strikers need quality service to thrive, that may be why Cisse did not score too many last season in a poor team. He would do better at Stoke!
He hasnt got the right attitude for stoke he isnt a team player we need players who put the team first not his wage bill, but there lies the problem the best/ most gifted players are selfish were not going to be able to get a striker that scores 20 a season not in the prem' and keep everyone as closely nit as we have now best we can hope for is 12 goals off 2 or 3 strikers each. We need better service a more creative midfield im not to sure that the likes of ledley will be able to bring that to the prem. But then again who can for the money we have.
I am sorry bexhillpotter but I don't agree, Cisse had good support at Sunderland with the likes of Richardson and Melbranque behind him and a good partner in Kenwyn Jones, they simply could not score goals and ultimately it is their responsibility. Sunderland have recognised this weakness and got rid of him to bring somebody else in who can do the job. He proved himself to be average at Liverpool and that was with quality all around him, what have Stoke got now or in the pipeline that could turn him into a player that we all want him to be, I am sorry but as it stands Salif Diao and Rory Delap will not cut the mustard, is this the quality service you are referring to?
I live in Sunderland and the locals were certainly not sorry to see him go. I would stay away especially with the salary he would want.........
Ok, here' show i see it.
The biggest issue we would have with signing players is not the initial transfer fee but with the wages they would get.
If we attempt to make a huge step up in quality in one season then we would need to bring in 4 or 5 top class players who would earn 3 times what the existing players receive. This in turn would impact the morale of the team and have a negative effect on our performances.
Even if we increased the wages of the existing players to compensate, our expenditure would be too much for the club as it currently is. Plus, there aren't many 1st teamers good enough to warrent much higher wages. We would need to replace most of the team over the summer to justify an overall wage increase or in increasing the minimum wages in the team.
Look at Lawrence now. he's earning half what Beattie gets and his contract talks are ongoing, and thats just for an extra 10 grand a week. Imagine how he and the rest of the team would feel if we bring in someone on 40 grand a week.
So basically, what we're left with is a situation where we need to step up in quality over a number of years, gradually increasing the salaries and replacing the players over perhaps 3 or 4 years. Some of them are getting on anyway so replacing them will be a necessity.
We've got about 8 to 10 players i feel we can get rid of which would free up our salary budget. We'd only need to bring in 5 players to replace these as they never play anyway. I just hope that we bring in a lot of players this summer who will gel with the team and not have a big shot attitude.
I would take Cisse providing he accepts wages on par with the rest of the team. If he doesn't then i wouldn't bother.
I'm not sure about Cisse gents, that could be a HUGE waste of money, Nugent on the other hand... well you may have something there.
My 10 penneth worth. Sell Diao, Delap, maybe even Pugh (MAYBE) and aim higher
